Information on changing money in Mazatlán
- You can change your US or Canadian money into pesos at a bank, cambio, or hotel.
- The best place to change money to get the best rate is at a bank. There is a Banamex just up Avenida Camaron Sabalos from the Panama restaurant. There is also an HSBC bank across from VIPS restaurant on Avenida Camaron Sabalos. If you are near the Costa De Oro hotel, there is a Santander Bank across the street. It is widely reported that banks will only exchange money in the morning. I am not sure if it is still true or not.
- The next best place to change money is at a Cambio. These are little booths located on almost every block in the Golden Zone. The rates are posted outside in large numbers. The farther away from the hotels and closer to banks usually give better rates. Be sure to count the money they give you immediately when they give it to you. Occasionally, I have been short-changed.
- The worst place to change your money is at a hotel. They will give you a terrible rate.
- Plan ahead to make sure you have enough money. If you need to get money at night, use a bank machine which will give you a better rate.
