Information on using Telmex Pay Phones in Mazatlán
- There are Telmex Pay Telephones in Joe's Oyster Bar and all over Mazatlán. Rather than using and having to carry around your cell phone, you can easily use the pay phones. They are cheap and easy to use. You can use them to call Pulmonia (taxi) drivers, or friends as you require.
- You can buy Telmex phone cards at almost every corner convenience store. They come in different denominations. I recommend buying the 50 peso ($5) or 100 peso ($10) cards. It never hurts to have extra money on your card when you roll out of Joe's Oyster Bar at 4am and want to call your regular pulmonia driver.
- Some Telmex phone cards have beautiful photos or art on them. You can ask the clerk at the store if they have any of these cards. They are nicer to have than the ones with Telmex adverstising on them. Here are some of the cards I have collected:
- To use Telmex pay phones, pick up the receiver, then insert your card with the picture facing upwards into the card slot. Wait for the display to show you how much money you have left on your card. Finally, dial the phone number you want to call.
- There is an exception to the rule of always having the picture side up. If the Pope is on the card, you will need to flip the card over for it to work! Notice that there is no circuit on the Pope card:
- To call a local cell phone, dial 044669 then the 7 digit number. Most local cell phones have a 1 as the first digit.
- You can also use these cards to call the USA or Canada long distance. They only charge 5 pesos (50cents) per minute. Dial 011- area code - phone number. This is great when you just need to call someone for a few minutes and don't want to pay the high hotel long distance charges.
